๐๏ธ Hey there, SaaSpreneurs!๐๏ธ
Ben Murray here, your guide to navigating the complex yet fascinating world of SaaS metrics. I couldn't be more excited to share what we've got in store for this week's episode of SaaS Metrics School. ๐ซ๐
One of our sharp students from the SaaS Metrics Foundation course hit us with a fantastic question that's got everyone talking. ๐๐ฌ How do you accurately record an increase in annual recurring revenue (ARR) when a customer renews at a higher priceโbut without any additional features, products, or added usage? ๐ค๐ต
Ready for some SaaS wisdom that'll up your game? Letโs dive in. ๐๐ก

๐Key Concepts to Learn๐ก
Booking ๐
In SaaS, a booking is an executed contract between a company and its customer, often tracked in a CRM system.
Importance
: Bookings represent committed revenue and are recorded with statuses like "closed won" or "closed lost." Properly tracking bookings ensures revenue forecasting and commission calculations are accurate. And we need this for our GTM efficiency calculations!
Renewal ๐
This occurs when an existing customer decides to continue their subscription, potentially at the same or a new rate.
Importance
: Renewals are key to maintaining steady revenue. They can be flat (no change in value), expanded (increase in value), or contracted (decrease in value).
Expansion Booking ๐
When an existing customer renews their subscription at a higher rate, the additional amount is considered an expansion booking.
Importance
: Recording the incremental increase (e.g., from $10,000 to $12,000, record the $2,000 increase) is crucial for accurate revenue tracking, sales commissions, and forecasting. And needed for the Cost of ARR Expansion metric.
Contraction Booking ๐
When an existing customer's subscription value decreases upon renewal.
Importance
: Just like expansion, recording the decremental value (e.g., from $10,000 to $8,000, record the $2,000 decrease) helps precisely track revenue loss and impacts forecasting and sales commissions.
ARR (Annual Recurring Revenue) ๐
ARR is the annualized value of recurring revenue from subscriptions, which serves as a crucial SaaS metric. But ARR is getting confusing today! Sometimes, we included sticky, variable revenue in our ARR number. Just be sure to disclose how you track ARR!
Importance
: ARR helps evaluate the health of a SaaS business, guide decisions, and track growth or loss over time.
CRM System ๐๏ธ
A Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system manages interactions with customers and prospects.
Importance
: Utilizing a CRM effectively ensures accurate recordings of bookings, renewals, expansions, and contractionsโall critical for reliable revenue forecasting and business operations.
Revenue Retention Report ๐
A report that tracks revenue retention, growth, and loss over time.
Importance
: These reports help SaaS businesses understand customer retention rates, identify areas for improvement, and make strategic decisions supported by data insights.
By understanding and applying these concepts, you can better manage SaaS financial metrics, enhance revenue forecasting, and ensure accurate commissions and business growth tracking.
